Looking for a Pongau hotel to use as a base for skiing or otherwise exploring Austria’s Berchtesgaden Alps? The Gasthof Werfenerhof is a reasonably priced Werfen hotel well located near the town centre. This 3 star hotel is a great value, with facilities such as an internet corner; ski storage and a ski boot dryer; and a wellness centre offering Finnish sauna, infrared sauna, and Swedish massage. Members of the staff speak English, Italian, and German. The menu at the hotel restaurant draws from favourite Viennese, rustic, vegetarian, and international dishes. A breakfast buffet is included in all room rates. The Gasthof Werfenerhof is located in the market town of Werfen, on the southern rim of the Berchtesgaden Alps, approx. a 40 minute drive south of Salzburg. On a rock above the town is Hohenwerfen Castle, erected in the 11th century; the castle appears in the background in one of the scenes in the film The Sound of Music, shot on a hillside around Werfen. Today the castle houses an extensive weapons display, a tavern, and a falconry centre. Visitors can also tour the Eisriesenwelt ice caves in summer and Bluhnbach Castle in the Bluhnbach Valley to the west. Alpine skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed in winter at Bergbahnen Werfenweng, approx. 10 km/6.2 miles from the Gasthof Werfenerhof.
